Belfort is a French commune located in the north-east of the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The capital of the Territoire de Belfort, the commune had 45,458 inhabitants in 2020. It is the main town and the urban heart of a conurbation of 78,867 inhabitants.

Established in the Belfort Gap, the town is located on an important communication route where the first human activities were already evident in prehistoric times. This particular location played an important role throughout its history, particularly in the 14th century, when the city was known as Bellumfortum. This strategic location in the heart of the Belfort Gap made it a military stronghold and garrison town on the borders of the Rhine and Rhodanian worlds.

Historically, it is part of Upper Alsace, a subdivision of the historic province of Alsace which corresponds to the current departments of Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin and Territoire de Belfort as well as the Landau territory in Germany. The town has always been part of the French-speaking area, as have the Welch valleys of Alsace. After the attachment of Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire in 1871, the current Territory of Belfort, then called the "remaining district of the Haut-Rhin", the only part of Alsace not to have been attached, remained detached and then acquired the status of a department in 1922. The decree of 2 June 1960 on the harmonisation of administrative districts attached it to the Franche-Comté region rather than to the Alsace region, a decision confirmed in 1982 with the laws on decentralisation which gave the French regions the status of territorial authorities.
