Description :

 

Geneva is a Swiss city located at the southwestern end of Lake Geneva. It is the second most populous city in Switzerland after Zurich, and the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva (GE). On 1 January 2019, the city had 201,818 inhabitants in 16 km2, but on the same date its cross-border metropolitan area, defined by Eurostat and the FSO according to the methodology of functional urban areas,a i.e. the agglomeration and the peri-urban ring, had 1,032,750 inhabitants in 2,292 km2 straddling Switzerland and France.

Since 2013, the canton of Geneva, the district of Nyon (in the canton of Vaud) and the French Genevan metropolitan cluster (a metropolitan cluster straddling the French departments of Ain and Haute-Savoie) have joined together to form the Greater Geneva area (previously known as the Franco-Valdo-Genevan agglomeration), a local grouping for cross-border cooperation (LGCC) under Swiss law responsible for ensuring cooperation between local authorities in the Geneva cross-border metropolitan area, particularly in the field of cross-border public transport. With a surface area (excluding the lake) of 1,996 km2, Greater Geneva had 1,025,316 inhabitants on 1 January 2019, 58.5% of them on Swiss territory and 41.5% on French territory.

Geneva is the city that hosts the most international organisations in the world. The canton of Geneva hosts 39 international organisations and 431 non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The European headquarters of the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Labour Organisation are among these international organisations.

Geneva and New York are the two most important centres of international cooperation in the world, Geneva being the most important in terms of the number of institutions, meetings and congresses. The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) is the most active centre of multilateral diplomacy in the world and has been the venue for many historic negotiations. Along with Basel, New York and Strasbourg, Geneva is the seat of several international institutions without being the political capital of a state.

Geneva is the country's second largest financial centre after Zurich. It is considered the world's most important centre for transnational private wealth management and is, among other things, the world's leading centre for oil trading, ahead of London. Because of its political and economic role, it is a 'global city'. According to a 2019 study by Mercer Consulting, Geneva is (together with Zurich and Basel) among the top ten cities with the best quality of life in the world. The city is also known as one of the most expensive, competing annually with Zurich for first place in the ranking of the world's most expensive cities. As a result, Geneva households had the lowest disposable income in Switzerland in 2016 on a like-for-like basis, but this is more than compensated for by an average (and median) gross income that is among the highest in Switzerland.

The official language of the city is French. Geneva recorded 3.23 million overnight stays in 2018, which contributes to its characteristic as a "world city". Geneva's 140-metre-high water jet has been one of the city's main tourist attractions since 1891.
