Description :
Besançon is a town in eastern France, the prefecture of the Doubs department and the seat of the regional council of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is located on the edge of the Jura Mountains, less than 60 km from Switzerland, and is surrounded by hills and crossed by the Doubs River.
Capital of the historical and cultural region of Franche-Comté, Besançon is today an important administrative centre within the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, hosting the headquarters of the regional council and the academic region as well as a number of regional directorates. It is also the seat of one of the fifteen French ecclesiastical provinces and one of the two divisions of the French Army.
Besançon had 118,258 inhabitants in 2020, making it the 32nd most populous commune in France. Its inhabitants are called Bisontins. Its urban unit had 140,290 inhabitants in 2020 and its catchment area, which extends over the departments of Doubs, Jura and Haute-Saône, had 281,610 inhabitants. It is at the centre of an inter-municipality, Grand Besançon Métropole, comprising 68 communes and 196,278 inhabitants in 2020.
Established in a meander of the Doubs, the city has played an important role since Gallo-Roman times under the name of Vesontio, capital of the Sequanes. Its geography and specific history have made it in turn a military stronghold, a garrison town, a political centre and a religious capital.
Besançon, the historic cradle of French watchmaking, has inherited this know-how to become an important industrial centre with innovative companies in the field of microtechnology, micromechanics and biomedical engineering. As a university town, its university, founded in 1423, welcomes nearly 30,000 students every year, including some 4,000 trainees from all over the world at its centre for applied linguistics.
Proclaimed the first green city in France, the Comtois capital enjoys a recognised quality of life. Thanks to its rich historical and cultural heritage and its unique architecture, Besançon has had the Ville d'Art et d'Histoire label since 1986 and its fortifications, designed by Vauban, have been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2008.
