Chalon-sur-Saône is a French commune located in the department of Saône-et-Loire in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.
With its 45,094 inhabitants at the last census in 2020, it is the most populated city in the department (ahead of Mâcon, the capital), the 4th most populated city in the region (after Dijon, Besançon and Belfort, ahead of Auxerre and Nevers) and the 2nd largest city in Burgundy. It is ranked 147th in France in terms of the number of inhabitants (out of 35,357 communes). It is also the most densely populated in the department with almost 3,000 inhabitants/km2.
The agglomeration community known as Le Grand Chalon had 113,920 inhabitants and its urban area 135,499 inhabitants in 2017.
